Volcano Eruption Eyjafjallajokull 2010

The volcanic eruption at Eyjafjallajokull has caught a lot of attention lately. The volcanic ash is carried by winds to Europe and causing serious interruptions to flight schedules.
Here are a few photos from the eruptions as well as links to more information.
Volcano Eruption - Beginning Small

Eyjafjallajokull is a big mountain of 1666 meters height.
The first eruption starts on the north side of the mountain on the 20th of March 2010. We are among the first to make an excursion to see the volcanic eruption.
After our journey a lot of interesting tourists came hiking, driving and even flying and they can get really close.

At 1200°C the lava glows. These are real melted rocks just starting to cool off.

The ash gives the sun a special color and the helicopter adds to the scene.

To see the lava fall down the canyon is simply spectacular. These have to be the heavies falls on Earth!

The size of the falls can clearly be estimated when you have the big 4x4s and the copter to compare to.

The lava flows slowly and engulfs and melts the snow on its way.
Volcano Eruption - Winning Photos
A volcanic eruption like this one is a fantastic opportunity to take some amazing photos. Here are two from a photo competition:

Sigurgeir Guðjónsson captured the northern lights playing in the background.

Volcano Eruption - All Out
On 14th of April the eruption at Fimmvorduhals has died but a new and much bigger volcanic eruption has started in the top crater of Eyjafjallajokull. As the crated is full of ice it takes a some effort for the eruption to melt its way through the 200-300 meter thick ice.
Here are a few of the best photos of the bigger volcano eruption.

Olafur Eggertsson from the farm Þorvaldseyri has to leave his farm for security reasons but still manages to shoot this amazing photo of the ash and steam cloud. This photo gets a lot of attention in the global press.

The national coast guard published this radar areal photo from the three craters soon after the eruption starts.
Scary?

Johann Jonsson - Listo - gets this spectacular view from the Vestmannaeyjar islands just south of the coast.

A satellite photo from NASA shows the ash starting its journey to international airspace.

Marco Fulle has perhaps some of the most stunning volcanic eruption photos - a few more volcanic eruption photos where this one came from!

This one is not bad either - from the Eyjafjallajokull Facebook page.
