Time To Reflect
While sorting through my photographs of 2006, I found four pictures
which I feel can bring a message for the future. The world is getting
smaller every year, environmental issues are getting bigger and we are
at the crossroads to decide our future, how are we going to preserve our
planet for our children?

The first picture is of a boot print in the hard clay of Sussosvlei,
deep in the heart of the Namib Desert. It reflects the fact that even
the smallest thing we do on this earth, can stay around for a very long
time. Until it rains again, and it very seldom does in the desert, the
print will stay. We have to thread carefully and be aware how we impact
our planet.

The second picture is the arch at Spitzkoppe. Once a pristine wilderness
area, commercialism is allowing more and more people visiting the area,
with a very visible effect. The area has very primitive facilities and
cannot sustain the influx of people, the result being pollution of the
area. We need to protect our wilderness areas, so that our children can
also one day experience them the same way we did.

The picture of the baboon mother and her baby shows the unconditional
love we find in nature, the bond between mother and child. Not only do
we need to protect our children, we also need to protect our planet as
it determines their future.

The picture of the abandoned house in the desert shows that the earth
will always take it back. It might take thousands of years, or it could
happen in one lifetime, but in the end, nature always wins.
