And what's the point of it? What are the components? What is the purpose? How does it work?
A photo journal is similar to a journal only that it is made using pictures/images.
For example someone who updates their journal of their findings/activities will write it down usually dated and titled (journalist).
A photo journal would be the same thing except using photos with writing or just simply photos (usually in chronological order) and are normally the work of photojournalists.
The idea behind it is to stimulate the reader with strong, emotional, creative or just simply thought provoking images that help to give an idea behind what the journalist has been doing/set out to do, usually they will be described with writing too. Although some talented photojournalists have a gift to be able to describe everything with just photos (hence why it greatly varies depending on the skill of the photographer).

I'm looking for something that I can write in weekly, for a long period of time to record my son's stages, but also be able to insert pictures into. A regular journal would be too thick, and a photo album doesn't have enough writing space. Any ideas???
You could write your journal entry on lined paper and then attach it to the photo album page with a glue stick, then fill in the rest of the space with photos and mementos.
– or you could get a journal and take out every other page to thin it out for pictures. You could take out the pages by cutting down the side but leaving a sliver in the binding, just as a spacer.
A photo essay (or "photographic essay") is a set or series of photographs that are intended to tell a story or evoke a series of emotions in the viewer. A photo essay will often show pictures in deep emotional stages.
