Recently, I discovered the website FreeDigitalPhotographyTutorials and was amazed at the number of great tips and tutorials they provide on photography.
After learning more about the website, I decided to ask the site owner, Stephen Hockman, for an interview and he agreed. Here below you can discover more about this valuable photography resource.
Tell me a little bit about the site.
FreeDigitalPhotographyTutorials, or FreeDPT as I like to call it for short, is a website focused on helping beginner and intermediate photographers. Our mission is to provide others with the most helpful resources on photography in order to help each and every photographer become the best photographer they can be. All for free.
Why did you start building this site?
My story for building the site is quite unique. It starts many years ago when I was a new photographer. Like others, I spent countless hours surfing the Internet for as many free digital photography, tips and tricks I could find. Well, let’s just say I ended up bookmarking over 100+ websites on photography! And that became a lot to keep up with!
Eventually, I thought to myself, “There has to be a better way for me to keep track of all of these tips and tricks I found.” And so, the idea was born.
In 2010, a friend of mine convinced me to start a website to collect all of the photography tutorials I was bookmarking. So, instead of having to scan through hundreds of bookmarks and websites to find the one I was looking for, I could just visit my own website to find the content.
At first it was just a personal collection of the very best photography tips I collected online. But, soon I found myself regularly referencing links on my website to other photographers on sites like ThePhotoForum.com and Photo.net
After numerous people told me how valuable my website was to them as a photographer, I decided to share it with the world. My personal motto moving forward was… as I learn, you’ll learn too, for free!
What types of tips and tutorials can photographers find?
On the site, you’ll find very specific photography lessons. This makes it easy for a visitor to find exactly the type of help they need in photography.
The categories include:
- Understanding Camera Settings
- Photography Composition Techniques
- Photography Lighting Tips
- Creative Photography Ideas
- Portrait Photography Tips
- and Photography Book Reviews
So, for example, a person who wants to learn how to become a better portrait photographer can go directly to the portrait photography section. Those who need to learn how to compose better shots can visit the photography composition section. And, those who want to find out what books on photography are actually worth the investment can also do so in the photography book section.
What makes your site different or better for those looking to become better photographers?
This question takes me back to why I built the site in the first place. When I was a beginner photographer what I found when searching the Internet for good photography tutorials was that I had to go to multiple different websites to find good information. One site might focus on great composition techniques, while another focused on portraits or lighting tips.
Instead of having to bookmark and visit numerous other websites, at FreeDPT you can learn everything you need for all types of photography in one place.
Another problem I found with other websites is that they offer too general of advice for photographers by just skimming the surface of a topic. My website goes in depth for each tip or technique so that photographers can get the most out of each lesson and have actionable steps they can take the minute after they finish reading a post.
What are your top three most popular tutorials?
