Kasia from Malishka Photography likes to create stories out of her
wedding photography. With candid shots she brings the castles and
cathedrals to life in living colour, featuring men in kilts!
Tell us a little about yourself and your photography.
My name is Kasia Maliszewska and I run Malishka Photography, which is based in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.
Why did you start taking photos?
I have always liked the fact that you can freeze the moment. Also an
image can tell a story without anything being written.
What inspired you to turn it into a business?
When I moved to New York my hobby became more serious. I met
like-minded people and this is where I learnt a lot of more advanced
techniques and started experimenting more. I had reached a level of
experience and accomplishment where I was ready to open a business.
For me, photography is a dream job and always a challenging and
exciting area to be working in.
Why are you fascinated with weddings?
In my photographs I try to tell a story. I am looking to capture the
interesting things that happen on the day. The nuances and the
excitement, genuine emotions. I take each wedding as an individual
project and give it my complete attention. It is great to be working
on photography that feeds into peoples’ lives and their love
How do you capture the love and feeling of a wedding?
I love watching people, their glances, their moves. I am kind of
able to predict, not always, but in the most of the cases, what’s
going to happen. I pay attention to what’s happening in the
background as well. I meet with the couples before the wedding and
get to know them a little.
I believe my friendly approach, combined with my photojournalist
style helps put everyone at ease. This leads to more natural
You do some incredible and unusual shots – tell me more
about your style.
Thank you, I am especially interested in capturing incredible and
unusual shots! You just need to be there at the right moment. I
observe all the happenings and kind of blend in. I try not to draw
attention, so I can capture the very candid moments. I would say my
style is wedding photojournalism.
What are some other photographic projects you enjoy working
I enjoy travel photography. Recently I have published travel
photographs taken in the African landscapes of Madagascar and my
next project is street-life of Sri-Lanka.
What kind of a camera and lenses do you primarily use and
how do you select your equipment?
I mainly use high-end Canon cameras, lenses and lighting equipment.
I mostly use fixed-length lenses, so if I want to get closer, I have
to step forward.
Can you name some tips for those who want to start a
Explore the type of photography you are most passionate about. Then refine your skills. You need to plan your artistic vision and try
and achieve it. I would start small since it can be a tough and
competitive business and you need to feel your way at first.
Thanks Kasia for sharing your imaginative photography and
those lovely Scottish weddings.
