Ice Flower Photo
Chile

This morning I saw something which made me think of Iceland. I call them
"ice flowers", which I never saw in all the time I lived in Canada, and only
have seen here in Chile.
They appear in the morning, when the temperature has dropped below freezing
at night but is mild in the morning. Obviously the ground humidity has to be
right, too.

I don't know how these ice flowers are formed, it might be interesting to
discover if anyone has studied them. I'd suspect that it has something to do
with the amount of humidity which is in the earth and the proximity to the
freezing/melting temperature of the air without any appreciable wind or air
movement.
Almost all the time I can remember seeing them it has always been on a
morning when there is bright sunlight, but maybe that's only because I
haven't looked for them when it's been cloudy or rainy.

I've also seen some which are much longer and much prettier than the photos I sent. I can recall some which were "growing" out of some green grass, instead of the soil. Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos of those, but I will certainly do so, if I ever see them again.
Have you ever seen anything like these?
