Jason Wickens has built up the website Fotoviva targeting the UK
market. You can get some great photography printed on high quality
Tell us a little about yourself and the Fotoviva site.
Since I was a teenager I have been interested in art and
photography, thanks to my Dad letting me loose with his SLR camera
back in the day. Once digital cameras became mainstream I got even
more into photography and these days I use a Nikon D7000 with a few lenses. The Fotoviva gallery website was launched in 2006 and has turned into a mainstream site for people looking to buy wall art.
We’re now one of the UK’s leading suppliers of wall prints to the
interior design market and of course home owners.
Why did you start building this site?
Originally the site was built to sell my own photographic images
printed on canvas. Back in 2006 there were not many websites that
sold canvas prints so it was a new and evolving market. We soon
discovered that there were some really talented photographers out
there but they had no way of showcasing their work on the web.
Building websites and online portfolios wasn’t as easy back then as
it is now, hence we started to sell other photographers work. Over
the years the site has grown, with more photographers and many more inspiring images to buy.
How is your service helping photographers and artists?
We showcase photographers work and sell it on their behalf. Their
photography gets promoted through various online channels to get
them more exposure. It’s another sales avenue for their work.
Working on a commission basis per sale, photographers can make some good money when we sell their images so it’s ideal for both parties.
What is the most popular category of artwork?
We have several image collections that feature different styles of
photographic art. Really there’s not much to choose between them but if I were pushed I’d say the Automotive Art and the Seascapes offer some of the best sellers. In terms of print finish, canvas art has
always been the most popular form of wall art but the acrylic prints
are fast catching up as they offer a fresh approach to interior
design and are great for modern looking home interiors.
What makes your site different or better for those looking
for printed photographic wall art?
We have a quality control system and only choose the right kind of
images to display for sale. By that I mean we don’t accept every
image our contributors offer us. We have a keen eye for the kind of
photography that will sell well as wall prints. Some images are
technically brilliant, but that doesn’t mean they will be the
perfect fit for our customers. Because of this we don’t have
thousands of pieces of artwork on our site. You could say our motto
is ‘quality not quantity’. It’s a cliche but for our customers it
means they don’t have to flick through hundreds of sub-standard art
prints to find the right one. We select the best, and only the best.
How did you build up the website and get it popular?
Over the years the website has grown and developed in stages. We
recently changed the whole system to update the look and
functionality, including a fresh new branding. We get involved in
social networking such as Facebook and Twitter but the good thing
about a business like ours it that people naturally talk about our
images to their friends. Great imagery is something to discuss so we
find a certain amount of our popularity comes from social circles.
Of course we do a bit of internet marketing too which helps us get
Can you name some tips for those who want to start their own
WordPress is a great platform for photographers – easy to setup and
use and with some great portfolio templates straight out of the box.
One thing I would say is help the search engines! Write a few words
about each image and give them good titles so the pages can get
ranked. Have a blog section to write useful articles on your work
and give hints and tips for your readers.
It’s all about engagement right now – social signals and all that.
