Iceland Boat Trip

PART 1 - PART 2
 

Early morning in the beautiful town of Siglufjörður and we have some fog sliding in.

We use the opportunity to take a look at the boat building facilities of Siglufjarðar Seigur - SigloSeigur.net - where a brand new Boat2Fish 36 - Seigur 1120 is just about ready.

After fueling up we are ready to cruise on.

A friendly wooden fishing boat we sail past on the way out of the harbor - Guðrún Jónsdóttir SI 155 - 1452.

As we go further out the fog thickens and we rely on the GPS and the radar to watch out for other vessels.

The Fossá ÞH 362 - 2404 is most likely going for shell fishing.

North of Melrakkaslétta we are gradually getting out of the fog and can see its remains by the coastline.

Fontur on Langanes is the most north-easterly peninsula of Iceland.

Kaldbakur EA 1 - 1395 - a full size trawler with freezing equipment.

Borgarfjörður Eystri is as charming from the sea as from land.

Cruising into the long fjord of Seyðisfjörður is magnificent in the calm and clear weather. Our next task is to get the boat ready for transport in the ferry and since today is the first of may we will have to wait until tomorrow to get a crane and other needed work.

Boat to fish!

Norröna - the Smyril Line ferry towering over the small boats.

Rán NS 71 a delightful classic old small fishing boat sitting on the mirror like waters.

Norröna is pretty big compared to everything in this small town.

Preparing for Transport

Since the height is limited to about 4.6 meters it is clear that the mast with the antennas has to be removed.

Perlen heaved up on land...

...and carefully laid down on a special sledge.

Other tasks include a new grease receiver for the steering and fastening the boat with ropes.

Finally it is ready to be put on board the ferry.

OOpppss!

The mast support is still too high. It won't go any further inside. Now we have to work fast...

...using the hacksaw to cut the upper half off the piece. The ferry sails at exactly 5 pm. and they are not flexible!

While we are still onboard they tell us to choose - either the boat goes on board now or it will have to wait for the next trip in a week.  - We decide to go on board.

This time it fits.

Perlen is pretty small as it sits in the entrance of the Norröna ferry.

Now we can safely return to back to Reykjavík. We have a booked flight from Egilsstaðir and are lucky enough to get a ride in this oil distribution truck that a friend of Maggi's is driving.
